NATIONAL
SEMINAR ON INTER - RELATED BUILDING SERVICES & FIRE PROTECTION
AT INDIAN HABITAT CENTER ON 31 OCT. – 01 NOV. 2003
| SEMINAR
THEME |
| |
Intense urbanization
around the globe over the last century, has resulted in
increased concentration of population in urban areas. Cities
got more and more congested horizontally, and there was
no option but to grow vertically. Emergence of a large number
of skyscrapers was the obvious development. Most of these
not only accommodate a large population, but many become
nerve centers for commercial, economic, social, or political
activities of the population at large. It is only natural
to ask, “Are such buildings functionally efficient,
economically built, reasonably comfortable and, above all
dependably safe?”
With the tremendous technological advancement in recent
times, multiple building services have become complex, highly
sophisticated and inter-related. These have certainly contributed
very significantly towards functional efficiency and comfort
in all kind of buildings, tall or short, large or small.
However, these developments have introduced certain potential
hazards, often unwittingly, unless the services are planned,
designed and implemented, keeping such possibilities in
mind.
While making our buildings
more efficient, comfortable, aesthetic and environment friendly,
what shall be done to ensure that these are safe against
forces of nature and natural calamity, against fire and
explosions, and other hazards. There can always be a situation
beyond what is conceivable or which is beyond what is conceivable
or which is beyond human experience and/or knowledge. There
cannot be absolute cover against any and all risks. However,
with proper approach and consideration in a logical and
scientific manner, we can minimize the risks against failure
and make a building that we can call safe.
How to have the highly sophisticated building services installed
and operated efficiently without adding to the hazard level?
How to prevent/contain fire in a building? How to make built
environment more fire resistant? These, and many such questions,
particularly related to the building services and structural
safety, we would like to deliberate upon with the experts
from the various fields. With this in mind and as a part
of our continuing effort to contribute professionally, CEAI
is organizing this seminar. We like to share the knowledge
and experiences of the experts in the seminar. The seminar
will provide a forum for presentations, discussion and analysis
of recent developments and understandings on various reasons
and remedies.
